SEP 13-22 | Celebrate immigrants and newcomers with Welcoming Week!

Belonging Begins with Us.
Celebrate Welcoming Week at the Ridgewood YMCA!

At the Ridgewood Y, our mission has always been to strengthen the foundations of our community by promoting healthy living, fostering social responsibility, and nurturing the potential of every individual who walks through our doors.

Organized in partnership with Welcoming America, Welcoming Week epitomizes these values by encouraging our community to embrace newcomers and ensuring that everyone—regardless of where they come from—feels they belong.

At the Y, we witness daily how programs that bring people from different backgrounds together lead to greater understanding and mutual respect. Whether it’s through connecting in a group exercise class or simply sharing stories in our lobby, these interactions break down barriers and build lasting connections.

Welcoming Week sets the tone for how we interact with each other every day by fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels they belong. This sense of belonging is crucial for the well-being and success of all community members. Research shows that feeling welcomed and experiencing social connectedness is directly linked to better health outcomes, higher educational achievements, and more robust economic participation.

As we celebrate Welcoming Week, let’s remember that our strength lies in our diversity. By embracing our immigrant neighbors, we not only uphold the values of the Y but also build a more resilient, innovative, and compassionate community. Welcoming our new neighbors is not just an act of kindness; it is an investment in the future of our community. At the Y, we are proud to lead this charge, ensuring that Bergen County remains a place where everyone, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to thrive.

How you Can Participate in Welcoming Week

Stop by the Welcome Center and add a pin to our world map—show us where you’re from, and get inspired by all the diversity in your community!

Learn a new greeting! There are 12 posters throughout the building, each with a QR code that will show you how to say “hello” in a new language! Can you learn them all?

Do you have a favorite family recipe that’s been passed down or reminds you of home? We’d love for you to share it with us for a Ridgewood Y Family Cookbook!

Take a moment to appreciate our world music playlist that’s playing in the lobby, or take a listen by clicking here!

ANNOUNCEMENT: New Autism + Adaptive Program

The Ridgewood Y is Proud to Announce our new
Autism + Adaptive Program

May 9, 2024 – The Ridgewood YMCA is proud to announce the launch of our new Autism and Adaptive Program for adults 21 years and older. Here at the Y, we are committed to our mission of serving the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Our Autism and Adaptive programming builds upon this by providing a wellness-based approach that considers the needs of young adults transitioning out of the school system.

In 2023, the Ridgewood Y began hosting autism think tank sessions that brought together local parents, experts, and leaders from partner organizations to understand the community’s needs. With this valuable input, we have developed programming to support the underserved population of adults with disabilities, primarily on the autism spectrum.

The Ridgewood YMCA’s Autism + Adaptive Program offers a wellness-based approach to support individuals with diverse abilities. Currently, our program includes specialized aquatics instruction and resources to help individuals thrive, with plans to expand into fitness and enrichment activities. As we continue to grow, we aim to create an inclusive environment that supports both individuals and their families.

As a leader in community programming since 1902, the Ridgewood Y aims to empower individuals to achieve their potential and create opportunities for everyone to thrive and succeed. We invite you to learn more about our Autism and Adaptive Program below.

To inquire about arranging a social event for your group, please contact Richa Koirala [email protected]

Financial Aid

We believe the opportunity to gain personal growth from our programming should be accessible to everyone regardless of financial situation or socioeconomic status. Our Membership for All program ensures that nobody is turned away because of inability to pay.
