POSITION SUMMARY: This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Assistant Camp Woods Director at Ridgewood YMCA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals, promotes the potential of all youth, and provides a quality experience to both youth and their families.

JOB FUNCTION:

  • Supervises & supports counselors working directly with children, supervising groups when needed. Creates, organizes & leads program activities; encouraging participation in group and camp activities. Build relationships with counselors to further communication & retention. Ensure that all program objectives are met.
  • Interpret and maintain safety and health policies and procedures; review and understand the roles and responsibilities of the camp director position in emergency procedures; ensure appropriate behavior of campers and staff to avoid risk of accidents; maintain awareness of camper physical well being; participate in safety programs each week; adhere to policies and procedures when caring for injured campers; report all incidents. Promote a professional image, maintain a clean and safe environment and actively engage, orient and assist all program participants. Makes ADA accommodations where appropriate; maintains the program site, equipment, and required program records.
  • Nurtures children through purposeful programming; plans activities that are intended to achieve program goals and outcomes, are culturally relevant, are developmentally appropriate, and are consistent with the Y’s values.
  • Assist in maintaining effective communication with parents/guardians regarding camper and camp activities. Ensure that campers and parents are comfortable with the activities and supervision of camp.
  • • Provides opportunities for youth to lead, problem-solve, and make decisions and choices within the program and provides daily opportunities for youth to reflect on and respond to their experiences.
  • Assist in planning staff trainings and lead designated programs. Work collaboratively with other directors in the general preplanning of camp, staff training, event days, and general programming.
  • Keeping the children in the care of the Ridgewood YMCA and participating in programming within the branch safe from harm and reporting signs and suspicions of abuse when necessary to the requisite state agency
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid required.
  • Previous experience in a camp or teaching setting strongly preferred.
  • At least 20 years of age.
  • Must be able to independently lead and actively participate in a variety of activities
