Three Ridgewood YMCA lifeguards were recently recognized by the Bergen County Board of Commissioners Office for their quick response and lifesaving actions after rescuing a 2-year-old boy from drowning at Darlington County Park in Mahwah.

On Sunday, June 28, lifeguards Dhalia Rose Genao, Thomas James Tesoriero, and Meaghan Isabel Murphy Donnelly responded when a 2-year-old boy was pulled from the water in the park’s kiddie swimming area. The child was not breathing when he was brought from the water.

The lifeguards immediately called for medical assistance and began providing rescue breaths. The child soon began breathing, spit up water, and started crying. He was then given oxygen while emergency responders made their way to the scene. Mahwah Emergency Medical Services found the child conscious and alert, and he was transported to the hospital with a police escort.

The successful rescue was the result of quick action, strong training, and teamwork among the lifeguards and responding emergency personnel. Bergen County Sheriff Anthony Cureton praised the response, noting the excellent coordination among the lifeguards, Bergen County Parks personnel, and law enforcement.

The three Ridgewood YMCA lifeguards were presented with medals in recognition of their actions and their commitment to keeping swimmers safe.

Bergen County Board of Commissioners Chairman Steve Tannelli posted on facebook: “We were proud to recognize three local heroes—lifeguards at Darlington Lake—whose quick thinking and teamwork helped save a young life. Dahlia Geneo, Thomas Tesorio, and Meaghan Donnelly from the Ridgewood YMCA exemplify the courage and selflessness that make Bergen County stronger.”

The Ridgewood YMCA and Camp Bernie employ and train hundreds of lifeguards each year at facilities including the Ridgewood YMCA, Darlington County Park, and Camp Bernie. Through ongoing training and preparation, lifeguards are equipped to respond quickly and confidently when emergencies arise.
