This summer, the Ridgewood YMCA was once again proud to welcome a group of 20 teens from Haiti who visited the US as part of the Haitian Youth Ambassador Program, a U.S. State Department sponsored initiative designed to provide overseas students with an opportunity to experience the United States first-hand.
Over the course of three weeks, the young men and women, all students who had demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities and an interest in improving their local communities in Haiti, visited Ridgewood, New York City and Washington D.C. During this time, they met with their U.S. peers, lived with host families, and took part in activities focused around civic education, community service, and youth leadership development.
This was the Ridgewood Y's second year of involvement in the Haitian Youth Ambassador program, having hosted a group of 10 teens in 2011.
We'd like to thank all of those in the community who so warmly welcomed our special guests and helped to give them what was surely a life changing experience. We look forward to welcoming a new group of teens in summer 2013!
