International Camp Program 2012

Each year, the Ridgewood YMCA introduces young people to life in other cultures through its International Camp Program (ICP).

ICP provides life-changing cultural experiences and the opportunity for personal growth, greater self-confidence and independence for young people grades 10-12.

This year, participants in the program will have a choice between trips to the Dominican Republic or Senegal in West Africa.Throughout the program, participants will interact with our international YMCA counterparts while performing much needed community service projects in those countries.

The purpose of ICP is to challenge each participant to develop a strong sense of self confidence, independence and cooperation as well as to deepen his/her appreciation for the diversity and interdependence among the world’s people. ICP is not a travel program, but an opportunity for personal growth and new cultural experience and understanding.

Two of the greatest benefits a participant will gain from the experience are the life long friendships made and the interpersonal skills developed by living in a foreign country with a small group of people. Participants will also learn about the bonds we share and the differences and values we respect in each other no matter where we live.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

The Dominican Republic is famous for its beautiful white sand beaches, vibrant culture and warm, friendly people. With the highest mountains of the Caribbean, breathtaking beaches and a vast network of underground caves, you will fall in love with this beautiful country and its festive culture.

As you volunteer in the Dominican Republic, you will be touched by the passion and spirit of the local people, many of whom have very little. Your service projects here will include the repairing of homes for families in need  and important reforestation work.
