Do I need a membership to register for classes? If so, what type of membership do I need? Yes. The YMCA is a membership organization. If you or your children are new to our programs, we recommend a $45 annual Program membership to start, which can be upgraded at any time. If your child continues with lessons or takes multiple classes each session, or if the family wishes to use our fitness facilities, then consider a Triangle membership with the additional benefit of reduced fees for lessons. To learn more about membership options, including a monthly draft option, click here or contact our Membership Office, ext. 313.
Do I need two memberships for parent and child classes? No. The membership is in one parent’s name, but any adult may come to class with the child.
What are the benefits of a Program membership? A Program membership allows you to register for classes and use the locker rooms.
Are class fees pro-rated if I register after the session has begun? Yes.
What is your make-up policy? In case of illness and with a physician’s note, there are limited make-ups available. With a physician’s note, you may also request a credit voucher in the case of long-term illnesses.
What is your refund policy? All memberships and class fees are non-refundable and non-transferable, unless the YMCA cancels a course.
What if I register my child for the wrong level class? Our Aquatics staff is here to ensure you register for the correct level. If you register your child for an incorrect level, your child will be removed from the class and fees will not be refunded.
What is the correct swim level for my child? Unless your child is clearly a beginner, please contact the Aquatics Department, ext. 392 or 304, for proper level placement. If, in our discussion with you, we cannot determine your child’s level, we’ll arrange to evaluate your child.
In what class should I register my 6-year-old beginner? We recommend 6-year-old beginners register for Youth Swim Lessons at the Polliwog level.
| Do I go in the water with my three-year-old? There are three options for a three-year-old. If you are unsure about the choice for your three-year-old, please call us, ext. 392 or ext. 304.Pike (lessons on his/her own): This is a good choice if your three year old is in preschool, has no separation issues and appears to like the water. Pike with Parent (transition class): This is a good choice if you are not sure your child will be successful in the water without you. The goal is for the child to eventually take the lesson on his/her own. Perch (parent/child lessons): This is a good choice if you want to be in the water with your three-year-old the entire eight-week session.
|
Is it safe for my preschool child to be in the water without me? Yes. We have an excellent safety record, and a lifeguard is on duty at all times in close proximity to preschool classes. In addition, most preschool beginners start with floatation cubes on their backs.
What is your participant-instructor class ratio? We maintain a six-to-one ratio for most children’s group lessons. Many of our classes have trained volunteers assisting the instructor. Advanced level classes have between seven and nine participants to an instructor.
May I watch my child’s swim lesson? Yes. There are viewing areas for both pools. Parents sitting on the pool benches are very distracting for the children and can pose a safety issue by obstructing the line of sight for the lifeguard.
How long are the sessions and how many classes per week? Each class meets once a week for eight weeks, except for Private and Concentrated Swim lessons. There is a 10% discount if you register your pre-school child for a second swim class during a session.
How long is each class? Parent/Child and Preschool classes: thirty minutes youth classes: most classes are forty-five minutes; a few are thirty minutes
